Student Spotlight

TChang172This month, we're focusing on Tiffany Chang, a multi-talented student who always has a smile to accompany her enthusiasm for learning.

Recently, Elizabeth Scott was able to ask Tiffany a few questions.  Let's learn a little more about her:

1) How long have you attended classes at HuckleBerry?
"I came to HuckleBerry in the second semester of 2009, when I was in third grade."

2) What are your hopes and plans for the future?
"I want to get into a good college because I will have to get into medical school someday, so I can be a heart surgeon.  HuckleBerry will help me to prepare for that."

3) How have classes at Huckleberry helped you to prepare for your future goals?
"Last semester, I took a class with Maitress, and it was a science class, and I remember one time I was really excited because we got to dissect a squid.  I think that really did prepare me because it taught me to cut really neatly--I want to be a heart surgeon when I grow up."

4) What piece of advice would you give to other students?

"Basically, sometimes you have to do things that are boring because there's no way out.  Everything can't always be fun.  But if you work hard, it usually gets fun later."

5) If you could teach any new class at HuckleBerry, what would you teach? What was your favorite class and why?

"I would teach any science class.  I like science.  Or maybe I'd do a literature class, because I like books.  Or I'd do a dissection class where each week we'd focus on a different animal and learn about all the different parts."

6) What was your favorite class and why?
"Last semester I took a writing class with Holly Van Houten.  We wrote novels, and it was really, really satisfying to create a novel and put it on paper.  I'd always meant to write a novel, but I just didn't get around to it.  But this class forced me to do it, and it really wasn't that hard!  Before, 200 pages seemed like a lot, but after the class, it seemed like nothing."

7) What do you like most about HuckleBerry Creative Learning Center?

"There really aren't that many kids in each class.  In public school, there's at least 20 kids in a class, but at HuckleBerry, if you need help in a class, the teacher can always help you.  Different kids have different ways of learning, either by listening, or by looking at things, for example.  The teachers at HuckleBerry are really good at being able to tell how kids learn, and teaching them the way they learn best."

8) What is your favorite movie?

"I like the movie Despicable Me--it was really funny.  But it wasn't too silly, and it did have a lesson, too."

9) If you could be any animal, which would you be?
"I think it would be interesting to see the world through a bird's eye, because it would be really fun flying.  Also, I have a pet bunny, and I think it would be really fun to see things how a bunny sees things, because they're really small."

10) What's your favorite music?

"It's funny--most of the singers I like are dead!  Celene Dion is pretty much the only singer i like who's still alive.  I like Karen Carpenter, and I also like opera music."

11) What's something interesting that people may not know about you?
"I don't suppose a lot of people except my closest friends think I want to be a heart surgeon.  Since I love books so much, people probably assume I want to be a writer."

RyanBalandranSTUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Ryan Balandran

This month, we're focusing on Ryan Balandran, a student who excels in several areas, and has won awards in chess--in fact, he placed 26th at the 2009 supernationals!

Let's learn a little more about Ryan:

1) How long have you attended classes at Huckleberry?
"Since it started."

2) What are your hopes and plans for the future?
"To be a video game programmer."

3) What piece of advice would you give to other students?
"Don't forget to do your homework."

4) If you could teach any new class at Huckleberry, what would you teach?
"Computer programming."

5) What was your favorite class and why?
"Chess, because I had a chance to play with other people who go to HuckleBerry."

6) What do you like most about Huckleberry Creative Learning Center?
"I get to take some fun classes and enjoy time with my friends at the same time."

7) What's your favorite movie?
"I don't watch that many movies, but if you ask me my favorite show...Fullmetal Alchemist."

8) What's your favorite music?
"Techno/electronic."

9) What's something interesting that people may not know about you?
"I would love to learn Japanese. I enjoy doing tricks with my yoyo when I'm not playing Maple Story."

CBoraoSciFair350This month, we're focusing on a student who recently was awarded First Place in the 2010 Jack Horkheimer/Smith Award for exceptional service in Astronomy!

Let's learn a little more about Christian:

1) How long have you attended classes at HuckleBerry?
"I've been attending HuckleBerry since it started - for about 3 years now."

2) How have classes at HuckleBerry helped you to prepare for your future goals?
"The Chemistry class I am currently taking is helping me with my goal to get into a nice college, such as Cal Tech."

3) What are your hopes and plans for the future?
"I'm really into bowling... I plan to become a professional bowler when I'm older."

4) What piece of advice would you give to other students?
"Listen to a Tony Robbins tape.  He is a motivational speaker and his advice will help you be successful in life."

5) If you could teach any new class at HuckleBerry, what would you teach?
"I would totally teach *drumroll* an advanced Astronomy class.  Astronomy is my favorite subject in school, and I would be more comfortable teaching that than anything else."

6) What was your favorite class and why?
"I haven't taken too many classes at HuckleBerry, but I really liked Dr. Roger De Sesa's first Human Anatomy/Biology class.  Just the way he taught the class really pushed me to work more than I ever had before with homework...because he gave out *a lot* of homework.  Not completing it wasn't an option."

7) What do you like most about HuckleBerry Creative Learning Center?
"I like how all the classes are nice and small, making it easier for me to learn.  In large classes, it's easy to get away with not actually learning what's in the class because the teacher has to focus on so many people."

8) What's your favorite movie?
"My favorite movie is Avatar."

9) If you could be any animal, what would it be?
"Hmm... I'd probably be a dog.  Dog psychology really fascinates me, and it would be interesting to see through the eyes of a dog."

10) What's your favorite music?
"I don't really have a favorite. I'm not very much into music, although I do enjoy listening to 80's music..."

11) What's something interesting that people may not know about you?
"Outside of school, I love to play a computer game called Spore.  Lake Peterson got me into it, and now I'm addicted to it. You can literally create anything you want in this game. I like to create cars, as requested by other people who play the game online."

natalieramirez200

This month, we're focusing on a student who has been a wonderful fixture at Huckleberry: Natalie Ramirez.  She's in 4th grade, and has been at Huckleberry from the beginning.  Natalie stands out because of her warm personality, her enthusiastic nature, and her big, beautiful smile; she always seems to be in the middle of the action, and seems to be everyone's friend.  (In fact, when we first started attending Huckleberry, my son was very shy, and Natalie was the first kid to make him feel comfortable!)  She has a lot to contribute, and her light shines brightly at Huck.

Let's learn a little more about Natalie:

1) How long have you attended classes at Huckleberry? Natalie: "Since it first opened".

2) We've seen you helping out at Huckleberry often.  What are some of the things you've done to contribute to Huckleberry? Natalie: "Taking out the microwave and other snacks, playing with kids in study hall, helping kids get to classes."

3) How have classes at Huckleberry helped you to prepare for your future goals? Natalie: "They help me fill in the holes in my learning like writing."

4) What are your hopes and plans for the future? Natalie: "I want to cook in a restaurant so I want to go to college."

5) What piece of advice would you give to other students? Natalie: "Listen in classes, play lots of games to learn and have fun with your learning."

6) If you could teach any new class at Huckleberry, what would you teach? Natalie: "An all-girl, anything goes class to have fun and learn together at the same time, we can do something different every month."

7) What was your favorite class and why? Natalie: "I can't choose. I love all my classes."

8) What do you like most about Huckleberry Creative Learning Center? Natalie: "That kids can be creative while they have fun"

9) What's your favorite movie? Natalie: The Home Alone Series"

10) If you could be any animal, what would it be? Natalie: "A horse, because they are gentle."

11) What's your favorite music? Natalie: "The Beatles."

JessiSThis month's Spotlight Student is Jessi Sande, who is the daughter of a Huck teacher (Penny Sande), has been attending HuckleBerry for years, has worked as a volunteer, and has been an inspiration to many of us at HuckleBerry. She always has a smile, a kind word, or a helping hand for adults and children of all ages at HuckleBerry.

Not only that, in 10th grade Jessi has tested into the college level English 101 class! 60% of California high school graduates attending the CSU system are failing to get into this pivotal college success class, so we wanted to see how Jessi got there! I caught up with Jessi and asked her a few questions, and here's what she had to say:

1) How long have you attended classes at HuckleBerry? Jessi: Since the very beginning. It was fantastic from the start and has only gotten better.

2) We've seen you helping out at HuckleBerry often.  What are some of the things you've done to contribute to HuckleBerry? Jessi: Well, the read-a-thon, helping Mrs. Stephanie around the site, running the game day at the open house, taking people to classes the first week and being a helper in classes.

3) How have classes at HuckleBerry helped you to prepare for your future goals? Jessi: Mrs. Holly has really been a great help and a wonderful teacher for my writing. I want to be a writer (novelist) after all. But I have been lucky to have so many other amazing teachers, and I thank each and every one of them.

4) What are your hopes and plans for the future? Jessi: Other then being a writer, I want to take a bunch of different classes at the colleges (I'm currently in Mission College), and I want to travel the world. I want to be in four places at once (the four corners) and I want to see the seven wonders of the world.

5) What piece of advice would you give to other students? Jessi: Try your hardest and put in the effort. I wouldn't be where I am now without the determination to be the best me I could be. It doesn't matter what "grade" you get, or if you are having trouble with your project. As long as you try, you are golden.

6) If you could teach any new class at HuckleBerry, what would you teach? Jessi: This is a hard one. I would probably teach a poetry class. I personally have over 400 poems and I think it a great, constructive way to express yourself.

7) What was your favorite class and why? Jessi: I have a couple of favorites. I always loved Thinking Tools with Mrs. Stephanie. I love all my writing classes. And the Harry Potter class, because I love Harry Potter and I'm a geek. :)

8) What do you like most about HuckleBerry Center For Creative Learning? Jessi: The classes and the people. It's a very comfortable place to learn. I like the projects. I love the idea of teaching kids to love learning. It was a very brilliant basis for a learning center.

9) And a few last questions (just for fun). What's your favorite movie? Jessi: Phantom of the Opera (2006 version, although Sarah Brightman is fantastic), A Walk to Remember, 10 Things I Hate About You, and Repo: The Genetic Opera.

10) If you could be any animal, what would it be? Jessi: A White Wolf, a Monkey, an Owl, or a turtle.

11) What's your favorite music? Jessi: I love music so much that I don't have a preference. But I think music is another way to express yourself.
